Pupil Premium (Information compiled in conjunction with our PP Governor)

The Pupil Premium (PP) is additional funding for publicly funded schools in England to raise the attainment of disadvantaged pupils and diminish the difference (close the gap) between them and their peers.

“It is for schools to decide how the Pupil Premium, allocated to schools per FSM pupil, is spent, since they are best placed to assess what additional provision should be made for the individual pupils within their responsibility.” Source - DfE website.

At Warden Hill Junior School, our vision is to ensure that every disadvantaged pupil thrives academically, socially, and emotionally, breaking barriers to achievement and equipping them with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in school and beyond, contributing positively to their communities and the wider world."

At Warden Hill Junior School, we are dedicated to ensuring that all pupils receive the best possible start to their educational journey. Our mission is to equip every pupil with the foundational skills and experiences necessary for making rapid progress during these crucial years of their academic development.

By implementing a cohesive and ambitious plan for the use of our pupil premium funding, we aim to ‘close the gap’ in attainment between our disadvantaged pupils and their non-disadvantaged peers. Our focus is on providing essential experiences for all pupils—those eligible for pupil premium funding as well as those who are not—to help them overcome any barriers they may face due to their circumstances.

Our strategy is informed by recent evidence suggesting that a tiered approach, particularly emphasising high-quality teaching, yields the greatest impact on pupil attainment. With this in mind, our plan has identified key areas for development, including:

  1. Enhancing Teaching and Learning: We are committed to developing teaching practises across all areas of the school to ensure high-quality education for all pupils.
  2. Targeted Academic Support: We will provide targeted academic support to ensure that all pupils are making good progress, regardless of their backgrounds or challenges.
  3. Addressing Non-Academic Issues: We recognise that non-academic factors can significantly impact success. Our strategy includes widening our response to these issues to support the holistic development of our pupils.

Purpose of Pupil Premium Funding

The government believes that the pupil premium, which is additional to main school funding, is an effective way to address the underlying inequalities faced by children eligible for free school meals (FSM) compared to their peers. This funding is intended to ensure that resources reach the pupils who need them most.

Introduced in April 2011, the pupil premium is allocated to schools for pupils who have been registered for free school meals at any point in the last six years (known as ‘Ever 6 FSM’). However, this funding is not limited to these children; schools have the flexibility to spend it in ways that best meet the needs of their pupils, provided they can demonstrate that the specific needs of FSM pupils are being addressed.

School leaders and governing boards must track the progress of pupils in receipt of free school meals to show how pupil premium funding is being utilised effectively. It is essential that this funding is not merely added to the general school budget to offset financial cutbacks.

Since September 2012, schools have been required to publish information for parents and carers about how pupil premium funding has been spent, along with the impact on learning, attainment, and the wellbeing or pastoral care of pupils.
